The theory described on this slide is one of the most widely circulated, incorrect explanations. The theory can be labeled the “Longer Path” theory, or the “Equal Transit Time” theory."（このスライドで説明する理論は、最も広く出回っている誤った説明のひとつだ。

The air molecules (the little colored balls on the figure) have farther to travel over the top of the airfoil than along the bottom. In order to meet up at the trailing edge, the molecules going over the top of the wing must travel faster than the molecules moving under the wing."（空気の分子（図の小さな色付きの玉）は、翼型の下側よりも上側のほうが長い距離を進まなければならない。

You find it taught in textbooks, explained on television and even described in aircraft manuals for pilots."（教科書で教えられ、テレビで説明され、パイロット向けの航空機マニュアルにまで書かれている。）

This part of the theory attempts to provide us with a value for the velocity over the top of the airfoil based on the non-physical assumption that the molecules meet at the aft end."（理論のこの部分は、分子が後端で出会うという物理的根拠のない仮定にもとづいて、翼型の上の流速を求めようとしている。） Two molecules near each other at the leading edge will not end up next to each other at the trailing edge"（前縁で隣り合っていた 2 つの分子が、後縁でも隣り合っているわけではない）。

ケンブリッジ大学（2012 年）："Babinsky filmed pulses of smoke flowing around an aerofoil … When the video is paused, it’s clear that the transit times above and below the wing are not equal: the air moves faster over the top surface and has already gone past the end of the wing by the time the flow below the aerofoil reaches the end of the lower surface."（Babinsky は、翼型のまわりを流れる煙のパルスを撮影した……

NASA グレンも同じことを書いています："particles moving over the top arrive at the trailing edge before particles moving under the airfoil."（上を通る粒子は、翼型の下を通る粒子より先に後縁に着く。）

Think of a paper airplane. Its airfoil is a flat plate –> top and bottom exactly the same length and shape and yet they fly just fine."（紙飛行機を考えてみよう。

This theory also does not explain how airplanes can fly upside-down which happens often at air shows and in air-to-air combat. The longer surface is then on the bottom!"（この理論は、航空ショーや空中戦でよく見られる背面飛行も説明できない。

NASA グレン「What is Lift?」："Lift occurs when a moving flow of gas is turned by a solid object. The flow is turned in one direction, and the lift is generated in the opposite direction, according to Newton’s Third Law of action and reaction."（揚力は、動いている気体の流れが固体によって向きを変えられるときに生じる。 For an aircraft wing, both the upper and lower surfaces contribute to the flow turning."（航空機の翼では、上面と下面の両方が流れを曲げるのに寄与している。）

The magnitude of the lift generated by the wing depends on the shape of the wing and how it moves through the air."（翼が生む揚力の大きさは、翼の形と、翼が空気の中をどう動くかで決まる。） The angle between the chord line of the airfoil and the flight direction is called the angle of attack. Angle of attack has a large effect on the lift generated by a wing."（翼型の翼弦線と飛行方向のなす角を迎角という。

Babinsky："What actually causes lift is introducing a shape into the airflow, which curves the streamlines"（実際に揚力を生むのは、空気の流れの中にある形を置くことで、それが流線を曲げる）。

Babinsky はその結果を "lower pressure on the upper surface and higher pressure on the lower surface"（上面では圧力が低く、下面では圧力が高い）と説明しています。

Experiment #1 shows us that the flow over the top of a lifting airfoil does travel faster than the flow beneath the airfoil. But the flow is much faster than the speed required to have the molecules meet up at the trailing edge."（実験 1 は、揚力を生む翼型の上の流れが、翼型の下の流れより確かに速いことを示している。 The upper flow is faster and from Bernoulli’s equation the pressure is lower. … this part of the theory is correct."（上の流れのほうが速く、ベルヌーイの式から圧力は低くなる。……

NASA グレン「Bernoulli and Newton」："From Newton’s third law of motion, a turning action of the flow will result in a re-action (aerodynamic force) on the object. So both “Bernoulli” and “Newton” are correct."（ニュートンの運動の第三法則から、流れを曲げる作用は物体に反作用（空気力）をもたらす。

Newton’s laws of motion are statements concerning the conservation of momentum. Bernoulli’s equation is derived by considering conservation of energy. So both of these equations are satisfied in the generation of lift; both are correct."（ニュートンの運動の法則は運動量の保存についての命題だ。
